YES Sudan to organise the First YES National Chapter Forum - April 23-24 , 2015 in Khartoum, Sudan

The 1st YES Sudan Chapter Forum will be held in Khartoum, between 23 and 24 April 2015. The event will be organized by the Sudan YES National Chapter in cooperation with Al- Neelain University, GeoRift Training Center, Nile Cat and GeoPetra Group.

YES Sudan forum provides excellent opportunities for sharing ideas, experiences and best practices in different areas of geosciences. It is an exciting, stimulating and rewarding annual event for young geoscientist’s professionals in all sectors.

Pathway, Practice and Platform into Global Earth Science Integrations

The theme of the 2015 forum draws attention to professionalism in the field of geosciences. This is demonstrated in the ways in which we constantly review our practices and develop our skills as geoscientists on the pathway to more effective education for our students and ourselves. Our success in this field by exploring effective pathways and platforms depends on how we, as Earth Scientists, shape our practices to explore and extract our earth resources.

Proposals for presentations and workshops are invited on any of the following areas:

YES Network partner in the First International Congress on Continental Ichnology - April 21-25 inEl Jadida, Morocco

Organizers and objectives

The Laboratory of Geodynamic and Variscan Geosciences (Department of Geology, Faculty of Sciences, Chouaïb Doukkali University) of El Jadida has the most important collection of Late Palaeozoic-Early Mesozoic continental trace fossils in North Africa. More than six hundred unique specimens of Westphalian to Late Triassic age were collected in Moroccan continental deposits during the last years. This is an ideal frame for such a meeting and the results may significantly contribute to the understanding of the evolution of fossil ecosystems during an important part of life's history including the origin and early diversification of amniotes, the rise of archosaurs and dinosaurs, as well as the most severe mass extinction at the Permian-Triassic boundary. In this context, the Ichnological Association of Morocco and Laboratory of Geodynamic and Variscan Geosciences, in collaboration with the Urweltmuseum GEOSKOP (Thallichtenberg, Germany) and the Institute of Geology (TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany), the SAURIERWELT Paläontologisches Museum (Neumarkt, Germany) with the assistance of the International Commission on Stratigraphy, “Subcommission on Permian Stratigraphy”, will organize the “First International Congress on Continental Ichnology” [ICCI]. The [ICCI] will be devoted to ichnology and biostratigraphy from a global perspective and originates from activities in the "Non-Marine - Marine Correlation Working Group". It will be also a major meeting of ichnologists and palaeontologists. The congress will focus on ichnology and ichnotaxonomy of continental vertebrate and invertebrate ichnofossils. The main objective of the congress is to discuss current problems and future perspectives of ichnotaxonomy of vertebrate and invertebrate ichnofossils from continental deposits as well as biostratigraphic and paleobiogeographic aspects of trace fossils and their potential producers.

Topics

1. Vertebrate and invertebrate ichnology of continental deposits

a) Palaeobiology and ichnotaxonomy of trace fossils.

b) Taphonomy of trace fossils and microbially induced sedimentary structures.

c) Trace fossils in palaeoenvironmental, paleobiogeographical and biostratigraphical analyses.

d) Trackmaker reconstruction and the evolutionary contributions of invertebrate and vertebrate ichnology.

2. Methods, applications, conservation a) Ichnology of ecosystem engineers in the geologic record.

b) Photogrammetry and 3D modelling in ichnology.

c) Palaeoichnological heritage : Geoconservation and valorisation.

International Bachelor Permafrost Summer Field School 2015

Time: 12 June- 3 July 2015, at the University Centre in Svalbard, UNIS, Longyearbyen, Svalbard

The University of the Arctic, Thematic Network on Permafrost offers an international bachelor permafrost summer field school in Svalbard 12 June to 3 July 2015 to be taught be a group of international permafrost researchers. We welcome senior bachelor students, who are interested in obtaining an overall knowledge about permafrost. The course will offer insights into:

• Permafrost basics and its distribution globally.

• Permafrost temperatures in various parts of the World – climatic and other controls.

• Methods of permafrost observations, focusing on drilling, coring and instrumentation.

• Permafrost databases and their use in permafrost analyses.

• How does permafrost affect local community infrastructure and cultural life?

• Interaction between carbon and water in permafrost landscapes.

• How sensitive are permafrost landforms towards climate change?

You can take this course either as a 5 ECTS point course, finishing with an oral presentation in the summer school. Or you can do an individual science project based on the course knowledge, to be submitted by the end of the autumn/fall semester following the summer field school and then graded, and you will obtain 10 ECTS. Students doing 10 ECTS will be given preference to the course.

Accommodation for students during the course in student housing in Longyearbyen, and it will cost 3900-4600 NOK, corresponding to app. 490-575 Euro, depending on the type of room chosen."

Fourth Forum for Young Permafrost Scientists - Yakuts, Russia: Call for registration form and abstract

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to the Fourth Forum for Young Permafrost Scientists to be held in Yakutsk, Russia from 25 June to 10 July 2015. This event will commemorate the 200th birthday of Alexander von Middendorff and is open to young researchers under the age of 35 years, including undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.

The previous Forums were hosted by the Melnikov Permafrost Institute in 2013, 2010, and 2008 and brought together young researchers from around the world (http://mpi.ysn.ru/index.php/en/fyps.html).

The Forum for Young Permafrost Scientists will include

the Geocryological Conference held from 25–28 June 2015 and

the Geocryological Field Workshop from 30 June to 10 July 2015.

In addition to traditional topics, the 2015 Forum will focus on emerging new areas of geocryological research:

• Regional and historical geocryology

• Permafrost geothermics and thermal physics

• Periglacial processes and forms

• Landscape dynamics in permafrost regions

• Permafrost geochemistry

• Permafrost hydrology and hydrogeology
